As seven dwarfs say..

“Heigh-ho, heigh-ho It’s off to work we go!”

The last couple weeks have been extremely busy, lots of late nights and early mornings.  We put a lot of time into organizing and cleaning some of the work areas which became a little chaotic over the holiday season.

We relocated some tables which had been used for storage and packaging.  We are once again bringing more production in house from overseas.  This means we need more space for speaker production and preparation.

You can see a small run of SQ10’s happening at this time.

This last Saturday, Matt and I came in to work on some amplifiers modifications for sealed subwoofers.

On the custom front these last couple weeks we have something pretty out of the ordinary for an audio manufacturing company. Dry erase whiteboards.

Yup! You read that correctly. Our friends over at Dwolla set us up with a company in Des Moines looking for some large format dry erase whiteboards.  As usual, our answer was, “Heck ya, we can do that.”

Matt next to the boards to show the size.  My understanding is that they will be covering the walls in a conference room.  Not many places make 4×8′ dry erase boards.

We also built some powered subwoofer cabinets with dual 12″ subwoofer, and dual 12″ passive radiators.  One on the back and one on the bottom.  I am excited to see this loaded up and in room.

The production team has been doing a great job trying to catch up on A2-300’s and still keep up on other products.

Matt was pretty proud of one days cabinets getting QC/QA before shipping out.

We also had a big week of A7-900’s.

Here are a couple photos of some in various steps.

We also had a big shipping week.

Its fun when we get to fill the truck, and Roy our driver has to put some packages up front by the passenger seat.  He some times comes a couple hours early to pick up some HT subwoofers for “traction” weight.

To touch back on the production one last time, we ran into a hiccup.  As some of you might remember, earlier in 09′ our paint gun broke. The manufacturer mentioned how the new gun has an almost indestructible  body.  Apparently that doesnt prevent the metal trigger from breaking.

The next day we had a replacement trigger and painting had resumed.

Late last week Matt ran out of fuel with the fork lift. What an inconvenient time, don’t you think?

Speaking of forklifts, Anthony started unloading trucks the earlier in the month. He was pretty excited about being able to drive the beast.

Electronic House Dual A5-350 Review.

January 26th, 2010
A few months back we had been in communication with Stephen , a DIY Correspondent for Electronic House.  From the sounds of it, he wanted something loud yet fairly affordable to play with.  The solution?  Dual A5-350’s.

Ice Storm Iowa 2010

January 20th, 2010

Just wanted to give everyone who reads the blog a small weather heads up.

At this time we are looking at about a current level of 1/4-1/2″ of Ice with more headed our way; power has blinked off and on this morning and just came back.  If you do wind up attempting to reach us and can not get through, we are likely out of power again.  We will try to keep everything going as normal as possible here at the shop, but we did want to let you know that we are in the midst of a pretty good storm.  Hopefully when we all dry off from digging our cars out of the ice this morning one of us will want to go out there and get some amazing weather pictures.   =)

Introducing the EL Series.

January 19th, 2010

After almost a year of prototyping and development, our newest line of high end full range products are available.  I introduce to you the EL Series.  Our goals with this line is to offer  products that could accurately reproduce sound while still having the ability to get loud.  A three way design was chosen with the EL to not only increase power handling, but overall fidelity.  All while keeping the design simple and sophisticated looking.

Let me explain a little bit about the new naming structure before we get into specifications and production photographs.

EL comes from our name Elemental.

The first number tells you the size of the woofer/s which are used in the speakers.

The second number, which follows after the period, designates if the design is a two or three way orientation.

The final letter designates the speakers design.

  • t is for tower.
  • b is for bookshelf pair.
  • c is for center channel.
  • mtm is for a mid/tweeter/mid orientation. These can be used as mains, surrounds, or a center channel.

The Construction:

All EL series speakers are hand crafted in our Newton, Iowa manufacturing facility.  The cabinets are constructed from .75″ EFS, and use our locking and inset bracing techniques seen in all subwoofer cabinets.  The use of .75″ bracing reduces any unwanted resonance and vibration. All cabinets also include a high quality damping material to reduce any coloration from cabinet reflections.

Our Finish Options:

The standard Matte finish come in two options;  black or white.

The premium finishes are real wood veneers. They are available in Bamboo, Cherry, Maple and Walnut. All wood veneers are done in the Iowa heartland as well.  The veneers are finished in a water based satin clear; this gives the wood a natural tone, bringing out the real colors while protecting the wood for years and years without yellowing.  Stains can also be applied for a small premium.

The Heart of the Design; the Crossover:

Everything from the board layout to the assembly is done here by skilled craftsmen.  Crossover networks are optimized using advanced speaker modeling software to meet our strict requirements.  The design is then finalized after hours of auditioning and fine-tuning.

All crossover components are audiophile grade with high tolerances.  From the non inductive wire wound resistors, to the high purity copper inductors.  Nothing is short changed in the designs.

The crossover design is something which has a lot of time invested, and is important to get the speakers to blend well together.  Being a very critical part of how the speaker sounds, we are not happy until it is 100% right.

The Drivers:

The tweeter is a 1-1/8″ fabric dome with rear chamber.  The rear chamber helps lower the frequency response of the driver.  Lowering distortion levels and flattening frequency response as well.  We choose to employ this tweeter due to its high power handling, small mounting size, and accurate musical reproduction.

We choose the small profile tweeter to allow for close proximity to the midrange.  This results in more accurate sound reproduction.

The midrange is a 3″ fabric dome.  We choose to use a dome midrange due to their fairly high sensitivity rating and natural ability to reproduce a smooth as butter frequency response.   The dome midrange also offers an amazing off axis response.  This is really critical in how well the speakers image and stage with one another.  I was really amazed during one listening session, when you could hear the vocals of the lead singer coming from standing height, while the guitar has a stage height of around 2′ lower.  Really impressive when listening to a pair of towers from 8-10′ away.  The midrange is housed in its own sealed enclosure, this gives us optimal performance without the woofer drivers effecting the sound.

The woofer drivers used are 6.5″ or 8″ depending on the model.  Both models are standard with a heavy duty cast aluminum frame.  The frame is very open in the back.  This allows for free air movement and no coloration in the sound. The speaker frame also incorporates venting underneath the spider.  This uses the suspension to force air movement around the voice coil for cooling purposes.  The high excursion motor design has shorting rings to not only help dissipate more heat but lower inductance for lower distortion levels.  The cone material is a paper/fabric composite which is well damped.  This gives the speakers a very natural and warm sound without any coloration sometimes associated with metal cone materials.
